How can I make my media buttons to work on iTunes without the window being up?

I have a new Toshiba Satellite laptop. The media buttons I'm referring to are the Play/Pause, previous, and forward buttons, and they're not part of my keyboard. They are above my keyboard, between the power button and mute button. These buttons don't work while I'm on another window, they only work while my iTunes window is my current window, which I find to be pointless, because at that point I could just click the button on the screen. Is there a way to get these buttons to work without me having to stop everything I'm doing, clicking on iTunes, and then being able to control my music?

Right click on task bar, go up to toolbars, wait for the drop out to open, and click on Itunes. this should let you use the bottons on you laptop. If not try changing key board settings.
