How can I make my large fading image a smaller, faster-loading file?

I designed a web site for a family member. I made a rather large banner that consists of five photos fading from one to another with Adobe Image Ready/Photoshop. It's a very large file, so it takes a long time to load. On top of that, it transitions from photo to photo in a clunky, clumsy sort of way.

When I look at competitors' web sites, they have more photos transitioning at a slower, smoother rate without a long load time. The file must be smaller. I saved "optimized" in photoshop, so I don't know what else I can do. Did the competitors use different software like Flash or something I'm not aware of? Can someone help? How do I get a smaller file size and smoother transitions without sacrificing the number of frames? Can I pull this off without buying expensive software (I'm not a professional designer and this isn't an investment for me).

Here's my web site: http://www.theultimatesurface.com
Here's the smoother, better web site: http://www.awstoneworks.com/

Thanks the help.
