How can I make my guitar sound better? ( No pedals/etc.)?

It's a Level 11 Les Paul model guitar, I bought it for $170 and the thing just doesn't sound write, I've used a digitech, cry baby wah pedal, and a distortion pedal, but it just doesn't look good, are there any ways I can make it sound good? It's tuned in standard and there's nothing wrong with it.
