how can i make my dog stop whining?

my brother and his friends are playing street hockey. my dog (a 6 year old english cocker spaniel) is making very high pitched crying noises whenever she see the ball. at first, she was outside in a gated backyard, but then i put her inside and closed the door so she wouldnt see the ball. this made her whine louder and scratch at the door repeatedly. the whining doesnt annoy me, but i hate to see her so distressed. i cant give her the ball, because it is small and she could swallow it. i also tried giving her another ball, but she didnt want it. please help! how can i calm her down and prevent her from hurting herself?
she didnt want the ball at all i tried throwing it and squeaking it but she didnt even look at it.
 
Go play with her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like that is all she wants. I bet if you threw that rejected ball for her, she would be a Happy pup!
