Hello and thanks in advance if you answer this query.
The title speaks for itself. I want to also add:
- I know very little about programming, some C++ and Python
- I 've played a little with modding a few already existing games and could make a few things here and there
- my real talent is writing: stories, dialogs, creating concepts like: what should happen in that situation, what factors are involved there etc.
From what I've read so far I've figured that an engine must be created. That means using a programming language and creating it from scratch! Still, I am confused about the term "graphic engine" and the use of 3D graphics? Are they also made from scratch by a person game maker (not a program game maker, explained below)?
I know about already existing game makers, programs that allow you to easily create a game atmosphere. I've tried a few but I don't like the limitations they bring. I want my own game, using totally my own resources!
I don't want to make a game that looks like those from the 80's. NO, I think of something like Fable or Gothic or Elder Scrolls. That means a full 3D universe with freedom of movement and interaction, good, solid graphics too. And, yes, I''ve already heard the discouraging advice "Oh, boy, forget it, such games are made by hundreds of people, you alone could never..."
I have a couple of friends that could help me. One is an amateur musician, another is an expert drawer. I think that with my writing talent, the programming I could learn and with their help we could even create a good game.
So my question would be: What should I start with? Most programming languages don't deal with making games. Is there a tutorial somewhere for people like me who want to start such a project? Are there similar people with whom I can team experience perhaps? I need some good ABC. How should I find it?
