How can i litter train my kittens and stop them eating there litter?

we have 3 small kittens about 30 days old and we have set out there litter box and are hoping there mum to teach them, but instead they eat there litter and don't even try to use it properly. Also can anything happen to them if they eat there litter ?
 
4 weeks is too young, they can barely walk.

mom will teach them, but it takes a few weeks.

they all eat and play in it and even sleep in it. soon, they learn it is a toilet.

also, make sure the box is low enough so they can get in. no kitten is going to scale a wall to go potty. you might have to put litter on newspaper next to the box until they are older.
 
Clumping cat litter can hurt kittens when they eat it. The litter will "clump" in the intestine and that can kill them.

I would switch from clay cat litter to newspaper pellets like "yesterday's news" or pine pellets like "feline pine" until they are older.

Don't use crystal cat litter if the kitten tries to eat that it sticks to the roof of the mouth.
