how can I legally force my neighbor to not talk to me?

I recently bought a house. I moved in and whenever i'm in my back yard, my neighbor, who is always in his backyard, says ignorant, banal, and insulting things to me. Maybe its cuz i'm young. maybe its cuz i'm a small guy. Maybe its cuz he is old and thinks all the good times have come and gone and he wishes he was me. regardless of why he feels he can talk to me like this, the plain simple fact of the matter is that i'm a quiet peaceful guy, i work seven days a week, 12 hour shifts. I don't have company at my house, i don't have animals. I don't effect this guy at all. If the month has no holidays, then I work for 30 days straight, all 12 hour shifts. When i get home, all i want to do is smoke cigerettes, drink mountain dews and build fires in my backyard without my neighbor saying anything to me. For awhile i just tried to smile and act like he wasn't being mean. Then one day i interupted him in the middle of one of his rhetorhic and told him that unless he wants to teach me how to fish, play catch with me, and help with my college tuition, he does not need to be talking to me like my dad, regardless of his age.
this was the first time I responded impolitely to him and i think it surprised him because he ceased to talk to me for about a week.

now he has started talking to me again. I don't want this guy arrested, i don't want him to pay fines or have to go to court or anything. I just want him to not talk to me. Is there any law that protects me in my own backyard from being talked to by him.
I would be willing to do that BUT, he lives right next to me. can you get a restraining order on someone that lives right next to you, or do they have verbal restraining orders?
you are correct, my saftey is not compermised and i do not feel threatened. i simply wish he would not talk to me.
