How can i improve the condition of my garden soil?

It is very acidic and pretty much kills off everything i plant in it, even when i use 75% new compost,i cant replace the whole garden so what can i do,i have tried things like miracle-gro and baby-bio etc,but nothing has worked.The soil was quite stony due to the house being built in the last couple of years, the garden resembled a building site when i moved in, its taken weeks to rake out remove all the stones, the soil has a 'clay' feel and look to it, any ideas?
It used to be a pine forest before they built the houses on the land
