How can I help my friends who don't have depression understand the illness?

I am 14 years old and I have had chronic depression my entire life. It runs in my family. Lately I've been a lot more depressed than usual and I've been contemplating suicide. Today, my psychologist and my mother talked about it and decided that I need to be admitted to a mental rehabilitation center. They say that 9 out of 10 people who have never experienced depression will never understand it, but I guess it's worth a try... None of my friends have depression, and none of them get it. So, does anyone have any suggestions on how to help my friends understand? I was thinking a good way would be to compare depression to something else that everyone goes through.
Please help.
