How can I get some type of experience in the computer science field?

Here is a little background info on me. I am a computer science major, and have been for a few years. I currently attend a community college and am about to transfer to a state university. During my time at my community college, I've earned two associates degrees, one majoring in "computer programming" and the other major in "microcomputer applications". I have been so far been unable to get any type of work experience (even part time work) or internship (fierce competition).

I've taken classes and/or taught myself PHP, XML, SQL, C, C++, and IBM PC 370 Assembly and more.

I need to get some type experience in the computer science field. I just got done creating an online resume with a php front end and a mysql backend (which includes my past jobs, degrees status, and classes I've taken.

I feel like I need to start doing some projects to improve my coding skill. The problem is I have no idea of where to start. I'm creating a website for my mom's small business, but it's not enough. I need projects that challenge me, and give me something to brag about on my resume.

Please advise me.
