How can I get my wireless Windows 7 laptop to access wired XP desktop files?

I have a Windows XP pc, attached to a Thomson wireless router by an ethernet cable, and from there to the internet. There is no wireless adaptor on the pc.
I have now got a new WIndows 7 laptop, which is connecting to the modem wirelessly and from there to the internet.
How do I set up a connection between the two so I can transfer my files to the new machine? I've seen plenty of things on line about how to make the XP drive visible once a network is in place, but not how to get the network itself. Not sure whether this classes as wired or wireless as there's one connection of each.
I only need this temporarily, once everything's up and running on the laptop I won't need the desktop.
Or is it going to be simpler to go out an buy a crossover cable?
