If iv lost my iphone how can i get my mobile number from that lost iphone onto a new iphone?

I want the new 3gS 32GB, but my insurence will replace my iphone 16gb 3g for a 16gb iphone 3gS. So Im thinking if i can buy a new 32GB 3gS and get my lost iphone 16gb 3g number onto the new 32GB 3gS and then just sell the 3gS 16GB when I recieve it formt he insurence? but can i do this or do i have ot wait fo rth ereplacemnet 16Gb 3gS to arrive form the insurence and then buy a 32GB 3gS and swap the numbers then, then sell the 16GB 3gS?

Wait for the replacement phone to arrive BEFORE activating the new one that you want (3gS 32GB).
If you go buy the new one and then activate it, At&t might not send you a replacement phone for the one you lost because you're essentially replacing it yourself. Also, even though you have insurance, is there a fee or "copay" for replacing a lost phone? If the fee is too high it might not be worth paying it, especially if you're not going to be using the replacement phone anyway - you'll be using the new one you're going to buy.
But if you're heart's set on having both phones, call AT&T, have them send you the replacement (or see if you can pick it up in a store, that might be faster). Then go buy your new phone that you want. You can even buy it before the replacement comes but don't activate it, just keep it there. Then once you have the replacement, call AT&T and activate the new phone that you want. Then you are free to do whatever you want with the old phone.
Don't think of it as cheating the system. It's the same thing as if you were to use the replacement phone for awhile and then someone getting you a new one (32gb) for Christmas, so you sell the old one. It's virtually the same thing.
