How can I get my HP Officejet to scan docs to a USB 2.0 flash drive?

Flash drive is a SanDisk Cruzer Countour USB 2.0.
Scanner is an HP Officejet Pro L7500.

As I insert the drive, the error message I get is "Unknown device. Refer to documentation to troubleshoot". Naturally, no answer is provided in either hardware manual.
