How can I get my dog to sleep at night without whining?

I just got a maltese/ jack russell cross which is 11 weeks old. The troubles I'm having are toilet training (this just takes time) and teaching him to sleep alone.

We have put his bed, water and newspapers (to pee/poo on) in the laundry as we want him to sleep there. If we close the door on him, he whimpers really loudly and it breaks my heart to hear so I can't do that especially since he won't stop after an hour.
If we leave the door open, he constantly whimpers too and also barks (he doesn't do this in the day). The other problem with this is that someone sleeps on the couch so the dog goes and begs for their attention or ends up sleeping next to her.

We really don't want him to sleep next to a person but just to sleep in the laundry and stay there throughout the night. Any advice?
So would it be ok to keep the door closed? He has everything he needs in there except space to run around.

As hard as it sounds, ignore the whining. If you go to him for any reason, the whining has got your attention and that is what he wants. Even negative attention is better than none at all.

Get him a soft plush toy to sleep with - something furry and soft, something to snuggle with. Also, wear an old shirt that you don't care about any more, then without washing it, put it in the dog's bed. The dog will have your scent to comfort him when you are not with him.

I know its hard but if you do it religously your pup should respond and start sleeping on its own... The thing is is that you are shutting the door it most likely feels isolated, and would you like to be locked in a room in the dark???? as for muzzle, I dont know about that one....

I just let mine sleep with me, and they are great.... try it!
