I have a little boy who is 10 months old and screams everytime i put him in his cot awake. He has not attached himself to a soft toy but he does love his dummy, playing with my hands seems to be his biggest comforter. When he was a few weeks old he was diagnosed with reflux making it hard for us to lie him down as it would cause him alot of pain and make him sick so we spent hours holding him upright, we then found out he is lactose intolerant which was causing it. it is now all under control but we have been unable to get him to fall to sleep with being held. Would like to avoid the cry it out method as i think i will cry just as much as him!!
