How can i get into astronomy?

I'm fascinated by the stars and the night sky, but up until now, i havent considered astronomy as some thing i could get into. However, one of my teachers at secondary school suggested it to me as a hobby, and im interested in taking it up.

I live in an area with not much light pollution, and my parents have offered to buy me a telescope, but i wouldnt know where to even begin!

Are there any communities i can get involved in?

Could you recomend any books?
