How can I get a stuck tape out of the VCR?

The actual cassette is outside the VCR, but some of the shiney black tape part is stuck inside! Is there any way to save my cassette and VCR?
 
You need to remove the top cover and see if you can get the tape out that way. Then you need to re-wind the tape back in manually. The easiest way to do that is to turn it over and use a pen or pencil to hold in the gear lock (small hole between the 2 gears) so you can use a finger to turn one of the take up reels and wind in the tape. You have to do this while also holding the door open. Yeah I know, it takes 3 hands but been there done it several times.
 
Are you any good with screwdrivers. Try and unscrew the cover off the VCR and see if you can remove the type that way. I had to do that a couple of time myself.
