how can I get a government grant for a business?

I've heard there are grants available to start a business from the government. How can I go about applying for/getting one?
 
there are two types of businesses; non profit and profit.

there are no grants for profit oriented businesses.

however, if you start a non profit, you have much more paperwork,
get a specific IRS number and seek grant providers based on what
you do.........and that takes an average of 3-5 YRS.

99% of non profits fail in the first year because they get no
funding and have nothing to sell that is viable.
