How can i get a credit history for a cell phone plan?

Can getting a credit card and making my first payment on time help me get a credit history to get an AT&T cell phone plan.I was told to make a deposit of $500 before i can get the plan because the guy told me i had no credit history(my SS is just a month old).How long,and how can i get a credit history to get the cell phone and the plan i want(I am a student with no lease,rentals.Just have a debit card for my transactions).I need advice
