how can i fix a loose pedal?

I have a 1996 Buick Skylark... I was driving on the free way and the gas pedal stop working. the police officer that helped me told me that the throttle cable was broken. the tow truck towed my car to my house and parked it on the side of the street. today i moved the car in my drive way the car moved and the gas pedal felt really loose? can anyone tell me whats wrong and how can i fix it?
