How can I establish mobile internet connection on my ipod touch anywhere I go?

I love my ipod touch, but the idea that it needs to be connected to a wi-fi spot or my home router for the internet to work makes me wonder if there is a way I can enable internet on my itouch anywhere I go.

Is there an app or program that can allow the ipod touch to be connected without having to go to a hot spot or router?
