How can I ensure I'm getting credit for photos I took?

Digitally signing them will probably annoy your frinds and only cause them to crop or retouch the images before printing.

Just hand them over.

Or if you don't want them to have the files, email them some low resolution proofs and let them select one or two for a print on matte paper with your info on the back.

I'd like to do some portrait practice, and I offered free sessions to my friends. Though I will need to give my friends their photos, I still want to be sure my name is attached to them somehow. I can't really give my friends watermarked pictures to print. How ideal is it to simply digitally sign the photos (using a tablet) in small print in a corner? Or is there a better way? Thanks!

Ah, so you want to play professional, even though you are not.

If you are as good as you think you are, people will ask who took the images and your name will come up.
If you cannot trust your friends, then you need new friends.

The simple answer is that you can not have your name plastered across every photo that you take. Have your name (a watermark on the bottom right) of images you have on the internet. Images you sell are going to have to have the signature removed (unless the customer requests you leave it on).

As pointed out above, if the images are good then people will seek you out. Take any magazine or newspaper.. Does every photo have credit to the photographer on it?. No it does not!. This is how a photographer works, you take the image, sell it, cash the cheque and walk away onto the next job. No point in getting all upset that you can not have your name printed all over it too.
