How can I do search in MYSQL-PHP?

I have a problem because I am using a drop down box wherein the use chooses a range like date. Example, he/she will choose from the drop down box January-December, can anyone help me on how I can access the chosen option so that I can use them in mysql_query..."SELECT..."?
