How can I discipline my toddler when he becomes defiant?

My 3 year-old son is usually well mannered and listens..however, there are times when he can be a little stubborn. Now that he goes to preschool, I have noticed he has picked up new language and behavior, and not in a positive way. His teachers at preschool have talked to me twice that he refuses to listen sometimes and that he has a hard time picking up toys and listening. He has started to say no (by the way he screams when he says no) when I tell him to pick up toys or when he can't do something. He is becoming defiant... I take away privileges (like we did not stop to the playground after-school like we usually do because teacher gave me a bad note). I also give him short time-outs so he calms down ans stops yelling.... I also try to talk to him at his level so he understands that he needs to listen...I dont yell or hit him...Any ideas..I am at my wits...
