how can i disable shadows in civilization 4? or lowing resolutions to 800x600?

i have a nvidia geforce fx5500 graphic card, most of the games run fine but the game speed decrease due to shadows on my pc. i always play with shadows disabled and the game run fast, but i cant disable shadows in civilization 4. i have tried running it in low graphics.
