How can i cover or make a new top for my dining table?

I have a hand me down dining table from my brother. I like the style of the table, just not the color scheme. I'm a dark wood or antiqued look kinda girl when it comes to furniture and this table is a light natural wood color and dark hunter green. This wouldn't be so awful (I can always paint it), but the table top has actual tile set into it and of course that's also green. I don't want to get rid of the table because it was really expensive and nicely made, I just want to do something with the top because I hate those green tiles! So I guess my question is...anyone have a solution other than a table cloth??? I was thinking maybe i could make some kind of cover for the table top and just sit that over the existing top? It's oval so I'd probably have to make it rectangular...I have no clue how i would make an oval thing to go over it. Any help on how to make this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
