how can I copy my dvd/br to my computer so I can play them on my ipod touch?

I received an ipod touch for my birthday and I would love to be able to watch movies (dvd's and blu-ray) that I own as I have a fairly large library, is there a way to copy them to my computer, I know I can purchase movies and t.v. shows from itunes however as I already own them at home I really don't see the logic in spending more money on something I already own, anyone able to help ??
