How can I convert a .MOD file to a .mov file on Mac?

Hey all, I really need help! We have to make a french commercial for school, and we filmed it. But the movie files are in .MOD, and on my Mac (10.6.9) I can't open these files, so I changed them to .mov, but Quicktime can't open them, only VLC. But I have to put them in a Powerpoint file. How can I convert them or something? Thanks
