Music Love and Cars

I have an iMac with all of my music on it that I would like to plug into my "old" stereo so that I can just listen to whatever instead of playing individual cds. My receiver is a Pioneer sx-1300 and I have some nice big Marantz speakers hooked up to it. I know I have a decent setup but not an amazing one but yeah. I think the receiver could be as old as mid 80s and the speakers around the same age. I tried hoking my computer up via headphone jack to rca but I got alot of distortion and the volume was really weird. What can I use instead of this?
