how can i connect 2 computers without expensive equipment?

i mean, without the use of routers, hubs and hubbub: i have a desktop (main) and a laptop which is incapaple of connecting to the internet. can i run some ethernet cable between both? as long as i don't have to buy more equipment, please.
 
HI if it is only 2 PC's you would need to network the with a cat5 crossover cable plug it between the PC an network them as normal
