How can I clear my default notification sound/ ring tone on my htc hero?

I have a Sprint HTC Hero and I want a different sound for my notification and when i try to set this sound/ ring tone from an app noise i downloaded as my default. it still plays my current one that i do not want. Please Help. Thanks
