How can I check unread chat messages that was sent to me,if I have not logged off yet?

I was going to close the tab I was chatting in and a box popped up letting me know I had unread chat messages and it asked if I wanted to close the window anyways?(Which I didn't want to!LOL!!!) I would like to know how to read the unread chat messages,and where I can find them at?(In case this happens in the future.)
 
I dont know about yahoo....
but when using hotmail...you can view your chat history....
I think you can also go to the contact you were chatting with.....right click....and a window appears where it says "view contact's chatting history"
