How can I care for my Dining Room set?

I have a gorgeous set, big table with two wide leaves, and 6 chairs with padded seats. For the most part it's all in great shape, with a walnut top and chairs, and the table's apron and legs are an antiqued painted finish. The problem is that if I put anything at all on it, it seems to leave a mark - not a white ring - but a mark I can see when I stand back a little and let the light bounce off the table top. Is the finish faulty? (I purchased it used) What can I do, short of using a table pad all the time and not letting the beautiful wood show?

Get a custom cut piece of glass cut to put on the table top. It protects the table and allows all it's beauty to come through. ( The manufacturer may have glass already cut to fit it)
