How can I build my social confidence and self-esteem?

I am nineteen, and have extremely low social confidence and self-esteem.

To give you an example, I moved to my current town about nine months ago to start college. In that time, I have not made any real friends even though I am involved with several groups. I am unable to start conversations, make eye contact, or even spend much time with people. Simply, I am terrified at the prospect of social interaction, even though I yearn for it.

I have incredibly low self esteem too. I don't mean to sound like a pity partier, but I cannot think of a single positive thing about myself or my future. I have had low self esteem for a very long time... I would say since I was about thirteen... and I honestly don't think that I have any redeeming qualities.

Frankly, this is all very depressing, and I fear that it is only going to continue getting worse. How can I stop it now?

Best answer: get into counseling. Because of the long term problem, the cure will take some time.
There is a very good book, of Cognitive Therapy, that can help you but it's a tough go on your own, that is remaining consistent and hanging in there over time:
