How can I be able to adapt to fighting games?

I am currently playing BlazBlue: Continuum Shift since I just got it today. Unfortunately, when it comes to fighting games, I have no perseverance on how to do those combos to just keep my opponent occupied with attacks. On any fighting games, I am able to do good, but not good enough to fight against friends who know how to fight any fighting game.

I kinda know how to play, though I need to get used to the new controls and movesets, but I don't understand how other people are able to look at a combo list, and dominate that list like it was nothing to them. They just do it and all is good.
Whenever I look at a combo list, I kinda understand the movements, timings, and so on, but for some reason, I just can't either do it fast enough, or the game just really hates me that when I input the commands, it tends to screw it and do something unrelated...don't ask.

So just to dumbify this question down, I am wondering if there is a way for other non-experienced players at fighting games to learn how to adapt on how to create combos in (ex. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift)? When I go against my friends, they look at the list and know exactly what to do, but I look at it, I have no freaking idea on how to do this. Please help.

PS: I know practice helps, and also experimenting works too. But I am wondering if there is a trick to it for me to learn combos easy. (may be a stupid question, but don't care, I want to know how to fight for real.)

Plus, I am wondering what is a better layout to play on any fighting game with?
* D-Pad
* Analog
* JoyPad
