How can I apply a Verizon Wireless uprgrade from one phone to another?

We have 5 phones registered to our verizon wireless family plan. My grandparents "use" a phone...though they don't really know how to operate it. The number registered to the phone they use is eligible for an upgrade. Is there any way that I can apply that upgrade to one of the other numbers registered to the account?
