Beyond two degrees of warming the ability of some nations to feed their populations will be diminished.
When one nation is denied the necessities of life for its people, that nation will do anything within its power to obtain that resource from a neighbouring nation without regard for the sanctity of life.
In a warming world several nations will be the losers as their ability to obtain food for their populations will be handicapped by a lack of cash to purchase food outside of their borders, or a lack of water to grow their own food.
From North Africa, mass migrations of refugees will attempt to cross the Mediterranean as people seek food in neighbouring Europe.
In present sub-Saharan Africa the sub tropical zones will expand into new regions of the continent, wars will break out between nations and tribal areas seeking new food sources as their agricultural capabilities collapse due to a lack of water to irrigate crops.
Tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Jordan will be compounded as the dwindling waters of the Jordan River comes under increased stress from global warming as both nations draw off water for their people and their crops.
In Mexico and Central America refugees will attempt to move north to the United States and Canada seeking food that they cannot possibly afford to purchase. They will of course be stopped at the US Mexican border where they will be interned in refugee camps overwhelming the ability of aid organizations to care for them.
The darkest scenario plays out in the shrinking rivers of the Indus Valley, where water flows from the Himalayan Mountains through India and then finally to Pakistan who depends on the flow of water to grow its food to survive. As glaciers shrink, India may be forced to divert water away from the Pakistani border to be used for India’s own agriculture to feed its one billion inhabitants. One can only imagine the outcome between two already belligerent nuclear armed nations when they must chose between famine and nuclear war.
How can conflict be prevented if we allow the global temperature to go unabated?
