How can a new Special Education teacher stand out?

I have two more years left before I finish my degree for Special Education. I am interested in volunteer work and the like but would like to know more about how to expand my resume 'academically or professionally'. Are there certifications that would be good to have? Extra courses/knowledge/skills? A second language?

I know that there is a demand already for SPED but I am really interested in learning all I can about the field and being on top of my game professionally - and creatively!

Suggestions?

Classroom management and discipline are the two areas that I found to be the most important ones. When I was in college these area were not taught. Read all you can about them.

volunteer work sticks out the most. I would say help out at the special olympics. i used to go to the mentally handicapped elderly homes to volunteer.
