...the handset? Some of the reviews of a recent firmware upgrade for my phone claim that it increases the battery life and increases the signal reception.

I can see how software refinements could stop memory leaks etc and increase the battery life, but i fail to see how a firmware upgrade could increase the signal reception.

Any thoughts?
