How can a college football team be ranked lower than the team they beat?

Utah beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and now they are ranked lower than Alabama.
I don't get it.
 
Its basically the people that do the ranking. They figure in and add all the stats up throughout the season.
 
They will be ranked higher in the final poll. They will be #2 if Texas loses, #3 if Texas wins. Alabama will drop to # 8-9.
 
No final rankings have been released. They have to finish the Bowl Games first.

well, first off, there are still a few games to be played, so there is no way the final rankings are out yet.
 
thats the old rankings the new ones come out some time after the national championship
 
Rankings won't be updated until after the bowls. The bowl season is considered to be all in the same week.
