How bad is it to put regular gas into Lexus RX350 instead of recommended premium?

Got a new Lexus RX350 and love it but trying to save on gas, I was wondering how truly crucial it is to use the premium gas recommended. Does it really damage the engine? Or does it just decrease the performance minimally and not worth the cost?
 
Wow. This is just stupid. Okay, you buy a brand new car for probably $40k+, but you aren't willing to shell out the extra $.20 per gallon more? Wow. Pretty damn sad buddy.

I hope the engine begins knocking.
 
1. How is it you buy a new Lexus SUV and can't afford gas?
2. Doing that probably wont hurt the engine but it will hurt fuel economy and lessen performance. So you might as well put the premium in it.
