How "bad" is it to discuss an ex with the current one?

I have read many books, seen many movies on dating and they all say discussing a previous partner with the current one is a no no. Why is it so bad, especially if they are the ones who are asking about what happened in the relationship? Or is it even bad?
 
it's bad because if you're talking about your ex, it may appear as if youre not over them, and your current lover will feel jealous and insecure. it's best to let the past be the past.
 
My friend (who I liked years ago and vice versa) told her boyfriend about us and now he hates me. I guess that's a bad thing.
