Household Ammonia for Betta Fish Tank Cycle?

That Girl.

New member
I'm buying a Betta Fish for my boyfriend's birthday in August and am completely mind boggled by all I've read about cycling the fish tank first!

I want to do a fishless cycle using pure ammonia but I've read that it's impossible to actually buy pure ammonia and what sites actually mean by 'pure' is househols ammonia which contains only ammonia and water.

First I would like to know if this is correct and secondly, if you have the time, I would be eternally grateful for very straight forward, concise and (most importantly, I've never had fish before) idiot-proof instructions on how to do the cycle.

Thanks so much for any help!

Here's a walk through someone else did, step by step, of a fishless cycle with household ammonia - it is tricky to find one without additives. Read the bottle, and if you can see the liquid in side, if it foams a lot when shaken, it has additives!

You will need a full spectrum test kit, such as the API Master Kit, to do the cycle. And I wouldn't recommend trying to keep a Betta, or do a cycle, in a tank smaller than 5 US gallons if you've never done it before.
