House Work With Sciatica

Hi . . . I have had right sided sciatica for about 20 years (though sometimes it hits the left, too).

I have gotten used to in recent years having to take breaks when doing things such as scrubbing the kitchen and bathroom, dusting low areas, vacuuming with a heavy vacuum and such but today kind of scared me.

I had just finished mopping the kitchen floor when I could not straighten up. Shortly after, I started getting a different kind of pain in my right leg. It was on the outside where there is that crease between the muscles of the thigh.

It has continued throughout the day even with rest and trying to walk around stores tonight. The right hip is tender (sometimes is if I over-do) also.

Is there somewhere I can figure out how to do house work things without hurting myself? This new wrinkle in my pain has me a bit worried that I may have permanently damaged something or potentially permanently crippled myself in some way.

Thanks.

I am relieved to find that my leg is okay today at least. Must have just pulled a muscle for that.

Yes, I have been to doctors. They want to put me on anti-inflammatories (makes my stomach bleed) or muscle relaxants (makes me a mental zorabie). I currently just take regular Tylenol up to 2,000 milligrams spread out over a day.

They talk possible surgery but state that it could either make it worse or nothing could change. What little insurance I do have would not cover it.

I try to just live with it the best I can. One doctor even told me if it hurts, do not do it. How am I supposed to get the house clean and the garbage out if I do not do it?

I finally had to concede and get a housekeeper. To make the cost more affordable she does all of the stuff I can't do with my neck and back: mopping floors and cleaning the bathrooms. I can still vacuum and dust so I don't have her do that.

Hello, SpineAZ . . . I wish I could afford a house keeper. They have something similar to Merry MaiRAB but they charge nearly $100 for three or four hours of work, which I cannot go.

Someone said there is a bathroom cleaner you can use that is on a handle so that you do not have to bend or get down low to clean tubs, toilets, etc. The only draw back to that is the ones in the stores here have bleach in them. I am allergic to bleach. Does anyone know of any like that that do not use bleach or allow you to apply your cleaner like Dow or such?

I have found cleaners on handles (basically a scrub sponge at the end of a long handle -and often the handle can be adjusted) at places like Target, Walmart and Kmart. Then you just use your own cleaning solution of choice.

Luckily the person we have charges $30 for 2 hours of bathrooms/floors. I have her come once every 2-3 weeks and do touch ups in between. I can't afford the professional services so we asked around until we found someone we knew who used an self-employed cleaning lady.
