Hotsync Networking

Hi everyone. Here is the scenario, I am in here at work, 3 seperate palms, T3, E2, and a M515. My task is to get them all networked to a network drive so that we can all sync and get our contacts and datebooks in order.

We have our own computers with our own versions of PalmDesktop installed. I know mine (T3) works with the rest of them, however, the T3 will not sync with the M515's Desktop. I was trying to play with a user/profile thing, which will work I think if we can somehow get them to sync to a central location.

I tried to install Palm Desktop to our shared drive ( M: ) but because it is only a drive and not the actual PC it will not install there AND on my own computer. As far as I know I do not have access to that computer as we are not the only computers on this network. My other idea which I am not sure on how to implement is to have the backup files install to that drive and then use the desktop to pull them off of that central location so they are constantly updated as each of us syncs which would appear to solve the problem.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

Whew...all different machines. You could tell hotsync to sync only contacts but, as for sharing the same info off the computer with different hotsync names adds to the mix.

This is one for Moose Man!

Here is the progress Ive made thus far.

Just restating, if we can use my Palm Desktop all the other palms can sync to mine, almost like forwards compatability (how strange) but mine cannot back sync to theirs. So, in lieu of this, I decided to make mine a sort of host. Here was our initial problem that will just not go away.

Doing the job we do, we are often not at the office and out with clients. So we wanted a way to be able o sync to our computers and then when we hook to the network it also updates a master file and that would then in turn keep all of our palms up to date.

I was trying to fool around with the profile as opposed to a user (and correct me if im wrong) because I thought that multiple users could use a profile. So, that profile we have, say "Profile1", was supposed ot be that master file, with our other users being the personal ones that we can update on the fly. Sounds like a solid plan I thought if im going about it the way I believe it to work.

To sort of solve the network issue I set up the files to save on our shared drive. This has worked for me alone, simply because we have not yet tested other palms. I know that the E2 syncs from my own computer, but from the other computer I have to still play with it. When I turned on my computer today I forgot to plug my ethernet in and because of that, no shared drive, and no profiles/users.

About the users/profiles. If I am correct about that above, how can I get my info on my name, say "user1" to sync with the profile, "profile1?" Along these lines as well, when syncing, is the intial sync with the initial user the one that will tie itself to the palm? Or can that be changed. I was sort of under the impression that it coudl change, but it is unclear to me how this works.

Also, are there programs you can install that would in effect copy the program to another file location upon sync? I still dont know if that would solve all my problems though with needing to be connected to the network.

This may not help....but

Ok, the T3 will not sync back to the M515 desktop in any fashion because of older OS issues.

I would suggest you take the most recent desktop - which is the E2's and use it as the master. You can network the setup using profiles but the E2 is looking for it's desktop edition and if it can't find it then it won't be happy. The T3 should be able to sync to the E2's but not the other way around.

I personally have not setup a network of Palms but you can use Profiles as you are already aware of and it should work.

Not much help but that's about all I'm fully aware of when it comes to the network side of things.
