Hotel Rwanda

Watched this today. Harrowing though it is everyone should be made to watch it.

As the West stood by & did nothing we at least owe it to the people to see what they went through.

Don Cheadle was wonderful in it too.

I agree.

What really disturbs me is that we have to rely on the cinema to relay stories such as this and make people pay attention. I dont believe that the News corporations covered the story of the genocide enough to make people realise what was actually going on.

yeah, such a brilliant account of the tragedy that they manage to sneak in nick nolte, joaquin phoenix, jean reno and don cheadle (as an african).

jesus christ, could they give africa more of an inferiority complex if they tried?

What's so bad about Don Cheadle playing an African? I don't get what you mean by that, please explain. I thought he did a very admirable job. Also I saw plenty of African actors with roles in this movie and Joaquin Phoenix has a very small role, he leaves quarter of the way through and never comes back.

Anyway I agree this is a fantastic movie that will open a lot of eyes. I was disgusted with the treatement of them while I was watching and it's very haunting and disturbing how they left them there to fend for themselves. It's very affecting and I'm not surprised by it's critical acclaim and also very high opinion of the general audience. Excellent movie!

Hotel rwanda feeRAB hypocrisy with hypocrisy. a film exploiting the western worlRAB lack of response, by creating a pseudo outcry of injustice. The casting highlights this, with an american star posing as an african hero to appease lazy hollywood audiences who refuse to read subtitles. once again the western world abandons the africans due to laziness, only in another form. NB - rwandan's do not speak in english, and they certainly do not speak nick nolte canadian or jean reno frenglish. and if you actually knew the facts, you'd know it was a hell of a lot different to what was shown in the film.

Even the dialogue makes me want to cringe with embarrassment. Jean 'cameo' Reno states : OH MY GOD, THATS TERRIBLE, and then go on eating their dinners..." - some of the audience laughs, some empathises, but how many actually think...isn't that what i am doing right now? - making me an uber prick of the century in the process. but no, they utter how disgraceful it is - kazama-TTT stylee.

By turning a rwandan genocide into a hollywood blockbuster, turning it into a vehicle for american actors cv's, the vicious circle continues.

as werner herzog said of the movie :

"It is the worst of cinema. The detritus of creation. It takes a moving tragedy and tears it to pieces by greed. It is made by foreigners, for foreigners, never daring to step into the real world for fear of monetary failure, never transversing the bridge between film and culture, politics and spirit, fact and fiction. It is another fata morgana, a mirage, what is shown hides the truth."

I thought it was a brilliant film and Don Cheadle played the main character very well. I really hope it was a close representation of what really happened because if it was then the person protrayed deserves a medal.

I only hope i could be that brave under similar circumstances.

Actually can't be bothered. Perhaps you watched this movie like a corpse, devoid of any feeling, but don't expect the rest of us to. So I felt that what I saw was shocking and disturbing, well what can I do about it? The movie was designed to get these feelings out of us and it was the first time I had even understood what really went on. I know hollywood is a greedy, money making industry that don't take risks, but what they came up with worked by stirring emotional responses from the viewer while opening their eyes. And Don Cheadle (an African American actor) did a brilliant job.

Maybe this is the case.

I don't claim to be an expert on Rwanda but i certainly knew what was happening there at the time & was outraged then.
You have to accept that due to the lack on coverage that was given to Rwanda at the time hell of a lot of people did not know about the atrocities that were being commited.

Yes a film like this makes it easy for people by having American actors in the parts & yes it has simplified things but surely it is better for a film like this to be accessible to many & giving them an idea what took place there.

People like Paul Rusesabagina went through things that were virtually unknown by a lot of people in the Western world & I would prefer that a film like this is made & their stories told rather than ignored!
