“The Trenton hostage situation is resolved, the three children are safe, and the area is secure,” a state police spokesman, Sgt. Adam Grossman, said.
In a joint statement with Trenton police and county prosecutors, Sergeant Grossman did not say any more about the standoff, including how it ended, what became of the gunman, or any information about the children.
The resolution came in the hours after the hostage situation entered its third day early Sunday.
The identity of the man was not released.
The authorities first went to the home in South Trenton near the Delaware River on Friday afternoon for a scheduled visit “to check on the well-being of an individual,” according to Sgt. Robert Carrier, a spokesman for the Trenton Police Department.
That visit led to the discovery, Sergeant Carrier said, that at least one person in the house was dead and that others were being held by an armed man. The police evacuated nearby homes.
On Saturday evening, Sergeant Grossman said that law enforcement officials were in contact with the man.
During the standoff, police declined to give any details on the number of people being held, their ages or relationship to the armed man.
On Saturday, family members of a woman they said was among the hostages grew angry, with some of them going under police tape and briefly confronting officers.
“Do something! Do something!” screamed a man who said he was the woman’s nephew. “Make something happen.”
