Hospitals, Doctors, and BILLS?! Oh My!

woah dude

I'm pretty convinced that I have the shittiest immune system on the face of this earth. Right now I have another ear infection (I got rid of one about a month ago) and my throat is sore as hell. I'm headed to the doctor tomorrow to probably get another shot in my ass. The big difference is, this time, I actually have medical insurance. This is a big relief, but if only I could have had this back in October.

October was a bad month for me. I was semi-talking to this guy who was headed to Iraq, we weren't dating, but he apparently thought I was his property (then he resorted to stalking me on the internet, calling my phone a million times, etc, but that's another story). Well, one morning, I woke up around 9AM and tried to get up. I had this horrible pain in my right side. I thought that maybe I just needed to go to the bathroom or something, so I swung my legs over the side of the bed, and stood up... only to fall down from the pain.

I called my grandmother and had her come pick me up to take me the the doctor. The doctor didn't really do shit, and even had the nerve to ask me why I was crying. NO SHIT, YOU ASSHOLE. I FEEL LIKE I'M BEING GUTTED FROM THE INSIDE! He sent me to the local hospital to the ER. Well, we waited to get into the ER for FIVE HOURS. That's one hell of an emergency room.

We left and went to the city to the hospital there that I've used since I was a kid. It only took five minutes, and they had me in the back, doing bloodwork, and so on. They said from the looks of my white blood cell count, they didn't think it was my appendix. However, they still ordered a CT just to be sure.

I went to the CT machine, laid there for a little while, then they wheeled me back to my room. It wasn't even thirty minutes later that the doctor came in and told me: "Your appendix is severely inflamed and could burst. We need to perform emergency surgery. Which surgeon would you like us to contact?"

We told them, then I had to talk to the woman from anesthesia. Then, not even five minutes later, the surgery group shows up and wheels me away to surgery. All I remember after entering the surgery room is being moved from one bed to the other, and being told to extend my right arm to the right. Then, everything went black.

Someone woke me up in the recovery room about thirty minutes after the surgery, and I nearly had an anxiety attack because I didn't know where I was, I was hurting, and something was down my throat. The nurse calmed me down and gave me my first IV of what I guess was liquid hydrocodone.

I stayed in the hospital for a day after that, and still have the scars from the surgery. They are small, and in locations that aren't that viewable. One is near my bikini line, one is in my bellybutton (they pulled the appendix out through my bellybutton) and one is near my ribcage. They were just small incisions. I do have a picture of my appendix, but I will leave that at the request of people. I know 53V3N's seen it. He's also photoshopped eyes on the damn thing.

My big problem right now is just paying off the massive amount of medical bills that I incurred during October and from before when I didn't have insurance (before I joined the Army).

Right now, my bills round out to about this:

$15,000 hospital bill (appendix surgery)
$1,500 surgery bill (appendix surgery)
$400 anesthesiology
$600 radiology
$5000 (old medical bills)

Ugh. Debt. Hooray. I'm working to get all these paid off and OUT of the collections agencies. It's tough, but I'm doing it. I severely need a job right now though, as my funds are running very low from what I had saved up.

Luckily for me my appendix burst before I joined the legions of the uninsured.

I can attest to the pain, though. I like to think I have a really high pain tolerance, but that had me doubled over. I did manage to get to the car on my own (I didn't drive) and walk the parking lot...and I was out of the hospital in 3 days.

But god did that hurt. Post-surgery is no fun either, especially if you accidentally use your abs without thinking...I was in marching band so I got yelled at for not facing front well enough. The directors didn't pay much attention to the fact that I was recently missing organs.

I wouldn't call Tri-care good insurance.. but at least its insurance.. that is if your military beni's are under tri-care. If so you can get a fully covered boob job.. but not certain normal proceedures like a tubelegation...

This was after I got medically discharged, DL. So, I had NO insurance whatsoever. It sucked ass. Hence why I'm almost 25k in debt at the age of 21.

EDIT: And I'm so glad that mine didn't burst, Disturbed. That would suck. I know you were probably in worse pain.

The hospital should have a payment plan based on your current income.

Sucks though, I'm still paying on Manda's week long stay.....twenty five grand AFTER insurance paid 80%.

Yeah, that sucks.

believe the republicans.. unified healthcare is bad.. bad bad bad... sure it means reasonable prices for health issues and such but then they cant get obnoxiously rich off of your diseases...

I don't immediately recall because I was too busy being unconscious, but I think it may have burst after they put me under. Alternately I heard that it stops hurting after it pops, which is a very bad thing (you then ignore it and die or something). All I know is there was a lot of pain. You know that part well lol

Another thing that really bothers me is that I haven't had much of an appetite ever since my surgery. I don't know why. There are days when I basically forget to eat just because I'm not hungry. It sucks, and I try to remember when I'm not busy as hell, but the fact still remains that I'm not eating like I should.

Well I hope you have a speedy recovery, and man do those ridiculous costs in hospitals hurt. I'm glad you didn't die because of the incompetence of the first batch of "Doctors" (ahem)!!! My brother almost died under very similar circumstances. Good luck!

Hope you're feeling better, Danni.

Also, not to be rude, but I hope you've learned a lesson about not being insured. Spending ~$100/month plus whatever deductible is a hell of a lot better than being soley responsible for 25k worth of medical expenses.

Also, this is a very good example of why you should always keep at least 6 months worth of expenses saved up at all times.

so wait... were you medically discharged for related conditions? cause I mean the military is obligated to fix you if they are going to discharge you for it.

as for your appitite.. think they accidentially gave you some stomach staples while you were there?

Oh trust me. I've learned lessons on all accounts. My money's running thin right now because I lost my job (I had a reasonable amount saved) but after two months of looking for a job and several bills to pay... well, you can see where most of it goes. And I finally got re-insured because of my full-time college status. So trust me, I'm happy about being insured again.

No, they didn't discharge me for that. I had a hairline fracture in my ankle that didn't heal right (they denied me healthcare in basic, telling me to suck it up) and it still hurts me a year after. I'm in the process of filing claims at the VA for that. That's the only thing they will treat me for, though, considering I'm only a short-term veteran. If they would have fixed me to begin with, I'd still be in.

And as far of my appetite, they didn't have to use any staples anyway, considering the procedure used. In fact, because of the procedure, there is hardly any scarring at all. Look:

My stomach was a bit swollen from the air they had to pump in me. That shit hurts when it's still in you after they've sealed you up, by the way.

They didn't even have to use stitches, the incisions were that small. The biggest incision was in my bellybutton, because they pulled the appendix out through it.

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART:

That's what they pulled out of me. Through my bellybutton. Ouch.

I'm glad I didn't die either, JL! But the surgery team is a very good one, and my mother used to work with him in the same clinic, so she knew him. He knows what he's doing.

lol I don't have a picture of mine. They pulled it out in pieces. Also they basically had to take some of my guts out and clean them off. of course this means blood tests to make sure there's no sepsis, and laxatives to make sure my guts still work. Maybe you had to do the latter too?
