Im doing a horse camp (advanced beginner) and I'm newer at horses I can ride but I don't know how to canter/ lope or trotting, basically I need the techniqueue

English or Western?

Heres what the camp thing says

Beginners- For kids who are new to riding and horse care. They will learn to groom their horse, tack up, and to ride at the walk and trot. They will also learn to bathe their horse, the parts of the horse, colors, markings, and about english and western tack and how it's used and maintained. They will also learn about the basic needs of their horse including feed, foot care, and vet care.

Advanced Beginners- For kids who have done some riding. They will continue to learn care of the horse and to ride at the walk, trot, and some cantering or loping. They will learn all the things taught in the beginners class as well as cost of horse ownership and ways to ride and be with horses without owning a horse

Any help would be appreciated

:D Thanks

Well here is some stuff. Hope it helps:
The trot is a two beat gait. If you are riding english you will be posting. If you dont know what that means, it is standing up and sitting down with the pace the horse is going. So u will go up, down, up, down,up, down, etc. as if you are going 1,2,1,2,1,2......It will be hard at first but you will most likely be able to catch on.

The canter is a three beat gait. It is much harder than the trot. You will have to sit the whole thing. You may have a horse has has a canter that is hard to sit, but it is unlikely at a camp. You butt basically has to sweep the saddle with the horses tempo. It is a pretty hard thing to do so DONT feel bad if you cant get it right away. It takes bunch of practice. Since it says you will only be cantering a little, I would worry too much about that.

The main thing to do is keep your muscles relaxed. If you are stiff, you will fall. Muscles loose but keep your thighs tight on the horse so you do not fall off.

I hope I helped!!!

im a trainer and i always start kids in english then after the learn some balance and they dont have to hold on to anything else but the reins, then i give them option of English- Jumping or Dressage or Western- Speed events, Western Pleasure or Cow work...they are very different but i believe learning how to ride english first preps your balance cuz you have nothing to hold on to cause its hard to break someone of holding on to the saddle horn, its so much easier if you never start with it. good luck
