Horribly ugly walls, can't paint them, so what else can i do?

My husband and I are renting our house from his grandparents. I would like to paint our bedroom walls. They are BLUE WOODGRAIN PANELING!!! They are so ugly, but we are not allowed to paint. What else can I do to make the bedroom walls look nice? We can't add anything to the walls themselves, like wallpaper. I'm desperate. Like I said, they are blue woodgrain paneling, and the part that is supposed to be white between the panels is BROWN from years of dirt!!!
